Working with Hands - James E. Price

  Mathieson Shoulder Plane

I recently attended a Great Planes Trading Company Auction in St. Peter's, Missouri...

... and purchased the only two infill planes in the sale which included at least 400 planes.

The photos are of an Alex Mathieson shoulder plane that was advertised as being in new condition. I totally agree with that catalog description. It appears to have never been honed and used and has the finest throat have ever seen on any shoulder plane.

The cutter still retains its original bevel just as it left the factory in Glasgow, Scotland. I use all the old tools I buy and plan on using this one but infrequently. It has a dovetailed sole and the crescent moon and star imprint of Mathieson's top grade tools.

I feel it is a late plane produced by Mathieson and most likely dates from the 1920's or 30's. I have never owned an infill shoulder plane in mint, as new, condition before and look forward to launching this fine specimen on some good Ozark walnut.
