Yankee Braces

Working with Hands - James E. Price

Swedish Braces and Bits 2 of 2

This little brace does not have a thrust-block head and exhibits a head
style of a much later Swedish brace type. It appears that the upper arm
of this brace broke and a smith welded it back in place and
retrofitted it with a late 19th Century type of head.

This is the latch style on the largest brace on the left in the first photo.
Note the coil spring.

An unexplained feature of many Swedish braces is a punched dot
on sides of the chucks.

Two of the five braces have makers’ marks on the lower arm.

On Swedish braces any file decoration was confined to the chuck area
which includes the lateral latches. Most have some
sort of decoration in that area.

This is a photo of 8 spoon bits and the spring ring on which they were carried.
