  Rare Plank Plow Plane

It is a "plank plow plane" that uses ordinary plow plane blades and, of course, plows grooves of different widths in wood depending on the width of blade installed in it, just like a screw or wedge arm plow plane.

At the recent auction I purchased at auction a type of plane I rarely see and just had to have it to determine how it performs. It is a "plank plow plane" that uses ordinary plow plane blades and, of course, plows grooves of different widths in wood depending on the width of blade installed in it, just like a screw or wedge arm plow plane.

A plank plow is much longer than an ordinary plow plane. This one has a fence of the type seen on moving fillisters, one with two brass-lined slots for lateral adjustment but such an adjustment cannot exceed approximately one inch. Match planes for cutting tongues and grooves have dedicated cutters and so do moving fillisters but a plank plow plane can accept any one of the eight cutters normally used in an ordinary plow plane.

The iron and steel parts of my plank plow were very rusty and I spent almost two hours removing the rust and tuning it. The wood was dry and dirty but the patina revived after a gentle cleaning, feeding, and waxing. I found it to plow grooves quite well. Due to its long length it provides a very stable platform for plowing grooves in long boards.

This photo shows the left side of my plank plow plane.
Note the slotted fence mounted to the sole. The beech body
of this plane has beautiful flame on all surfaces.

This photo shows the right side of the plank plow plane with its elongated skate.

This is a view of the bottom of this plane showing the iron skate
and adjustable fence.

Any standard plow plane blade can be used in a plank plow
making it a very versatile plane.

This photo shows the plank plow plane at the top, a rare long handled moving fillister in the middle, and a common moving fillister at the bottom. All three employ a slotted fence for lateral adjustment.
