Working with Hands - James E. Price

  Old "Scotty"

In the process of unpacking and repacking chests I found my old buddy, "Scotty", an infill Scottish smoother that came to live in my shop over three decades ago.

One afternoon It was time to reorganize some of my tool kits I take to traditional craft demonstrations for The National Park Service.

In the process of unpacking and repacking chests I found my old buddy, "Scotty", an infill Scottish smoother that came to live in my shop over three decades ago. He's an awesome plane and I wish I could shake the hand of the man who made him because he was quite a master in making overstuffed infills.

It has a wonderful Howarth iron which holds a keen edge after days of use. I took out the iron and gave it a honing on some black Arkansas rock followed by stropping. I then anointed the already keen edge with some diamond paste, something Scotty had never experienced in his long life. Then we tried him out on cheap mahogany and expensive mahogany and as a team happily planed some boards for future projects.

Scotty performs well on wavy cross-grained mahogany.

And that old plane leaves a glass-smooth surface on denser mahogany.

This is a side view of a great old plane.

The James Howarth iron is near pristine.

When I first got this plane there were scratches on the sole
but left them as battle scars.

The front of the sole that holds the bun is a piece of art.
