The circumference is initially cut to a depth
of 1/8th inch.
Next comes removal of wood from inside the
so out comes my little gouges, chisels and knives
Wood within the circle is initially removed
with little carving tools.
I then switch to a router and proceed to cut
the recess downward with it.
I set a depth gauge to the thickness of the
object to be recessed
and use the gauge to determine when the recess is of the correct
I leave an "island' of wood around the center
so I can use the circle
cutter again to slit the circumference deeper. It also serves
as a support for the small router.
