English Hand Tools with Jim Hendricks

When Restoration is Only a Revival by Jim Hendricks

1 of 3

Over the years I have demonstrated the restoration of some pretty complex basketcases.

It was coming to the point where people were bringing me lumps of firewood to turn back into tools!! Now let me state here and now... I do NOT recommend buying tools in this state if at all possible.

Instead I would seek out crisp and sound examples and just "revive" them to ensure they are protected and can be used immediately after a little tickle of the iron.

See how crisp these planes are, if not a tad dry and dusty.

So today I will demonstrate the sort of examples you should be seeking... what to look for and the simple application of a good wax to keep them working for centuries to come.

There were some interesting names, a bit new for me, being only 200 years old but the goal was to show what can be found out there!

This first plane is quite astounding. It bears no maker's mark whatever but clearly is made from some beautiful English beech. Very little buffing was needed to bring out the flower, especially where it's cut diagonally.

This is one of a pair of side rebate planes with a 90 bed, showing the side edge to the rebate.

Learn how. Discover why. Build better.
