Making of an Ebony and Boxwood Square 1 of 3

After making the ebony and boxwood mini jack I had some small off-cuts.

Normally these would be chucked in the scrap box but such is the value of these fine woods that even small pieces need to be made into something. So I set about making my version of the Moxon/Roubo square as depicted in their drawings.

A remarkably easy job you'd think but to get it accurate needs care and attention.

Refining the two pieces to square and flat the mini jack seemed a fitting tool to use and my Carter, as always, bringing smoothness to the party!

My favorite cutting gauge accurately scored lines for the mortise slot.

Using the 0.3mm plate Japanese saw cut the fine lines to the mortise walls.

After snapping the waste the IWASAKI edge float flattened the mortise bed.
