Not long ago I received a SORBY
coffin smoother with adjustable mouth. It is in great condition
but quite dry. It needed feeding then waxing.
When selecting a possible candidate on eBay or other markets I
always try to look for "crisp". Edges that are banged about on
the top, splits, wedges chipped, and irons rounded over have
probably been abused rather than used by a craftsman. This
example is perfect, in fact it is "new old stock!"
I think this has sat on a shelf to dry out for a few decades...
very little wear anywhere.
My restoration and feed mix was wiped on quite liberally...
... and in seconds...disappeared like water down a plughole!
Now the mix has dried we can apply wax... ALFIE SHINE!
