Handsaw Sharpening & Traditional Tools with Mike Hagemyer

Mike Hagemyer

Hello, my name is Mike Hagemyer. My wife and I live in Michigan near our children and grandchildren. I am just completing a fifty year engineering career in the machine tool industry and look forward to spending more time with my family and hobbies (tools and sailing).

I started learning to use tools in the 1950s as a youngster growing up on the farm. Back then money was in short supply and much of what we had was hand made. I feel fortunate to have been exposed to tools and craftsmanship early on.

Itís a great feeling to be able to shape the materials around you into what you and others need; especially when it can be done without derogating the environment. I hope to be able to share a little of what I have learned with fellow tool buffs; and many thanks to Wiktor for creating the opportunity to do so.

I have a special passion for handsaws and some of you may already know my work. If you have seen the Duck on eBay then you may have at least seen my ads.

I especially enjoy salvaging old tools that would otherwise pass to oblivion never to be used again. Although I spent most of my working life creating automation, I have a special respect for the basics.

I consider hand saws to be one of those, along with any other tools, that doesnít need to be plugged in. Besides an extensive collection of hand tools I have and use a few power tools.

One of my favorites is an old saw filer that I restored and does need to be plugged in. I donít use it a lot but it certainly is handy for some jobs. I will share more on it latter.

To start with I want to pass on some important saw sharpening techniques which I feel desperately need to be clarified. I expect to get some flak from this but thatís ok. If I help only a few to become better filers and save a few more saws it will be worth it.

My eBay ID is: mico-design
