Making and Using Tools - Planes, Scrapers, and Shaves

Boxwood Low-angle Smoother by Adrian Britt 2 of 7

I finished the throat and mouth. Now it’s time to make
the low angle bed and wedge pocket.

The bed will be 15-degrees. The iron is 1/8” x 1-1/4” 01 steel iron. The wedge will start as a 1” x 1” square piece of Ebony.

So far; so good. All of the roughing is done. Now to smooth all the inner surfaces.

Testing a piece of 1-1/4” tool steel for fit and clearance.

Initial fitting of the wedge.

There are compound angles at work on the wedge. There is a 6-degree taper for the wedge. Then the wedge has to be inlet into the plane heel.
